The new design features stronger frames and drawers, 12 different frame options, 9 different drawer sizes, and removeable dividers for the 6 largest drawers. It also includes optional drawer stops and stabilising feet. I realise that lots of people have already printed the original version, so I designed the new version to be as backwards-compatible as I could. The new frames can be joined horizontally or underneath the original version (not above due to a change in profile shape), and the new 78mm and 158mm drawers will still fit in the original frames.
Although there are many excellent modular drawer designs already available, I was unable to find anything that met my exact requirements and most take longer to print than I would like, so I have designed this fast printing and economical modular draw system for storing lightweight parts and components etc.
- Fast to print: To minimise print times, all components are designed to print using vase / spiralize mode and without supports. Each frame also holds 4 drawers to reduce the overall number of frames required.
- Economical: The design uses only a small amount of filament due to printing in vase mode and requiring no supports.
- Multiple draw/frame width options: Two widths available currently, but I may add more drawer types later and some other attachments/accessories.
- Easy to stack/connect: The frames can be securely connected vertically by sliding them together using the integrated top/bottom profiles. To join frames horizontally, the joiner strips should be used. One joiner strip is often enough, but you can use up to three for added strength and a cleaner look (no empty holes between frames).
These models are designed to be printed in vase / spiralize mode.
I used a 0.8mm line width for higher strength, A 0.6mm line width should also give good results, but will be less strong. I used a 0.4mm nozzle, so lowered the print speed and increased nozzle temperature slightly to avoid under-extrusion at the 0.8mm line width. Update: I have now also tested printing a frame using a 0.8mm nozzle, but this resulted in a less defined outer profile including rounded corners, which affected how well the frames connect together.
The joiner strips may need to be printed with a brim due to their small footprint.
No supports required for any parts.
Using a 0.32 layer height and a conservative print speed, an 80mm frame can easily be printed in around 90 minutes, and a drawer in under 30 minutes.

Update: A version of the joiner strip with a looser fit has now been uploaded. This can be used if the original joiner strip is too difficult to insert.
Update 3rd Feb 22: Quite a few people have requested a drawer divider option, so I have now uploaded a removable divider insert. This is also designed to be printed in vase mode.
Update 4th Feb 22: I have uploaded versions of the 80mm and 160mm frames with a slightly higher tolerance on the bottom profile. This should provide a looser fit when connecting them vertically for anyone finding them too much of a tight fit.
Update 5th Feb 22: I have updated all parts to have a.8mm surface thickness. This should stop any annoying slicer errors and also help the models slice better in slicers other than Cura. (Still print in vase/spiralize mode)
Update 6th Feb 22: New mini joiners have now been uploaded with a 20mm length instead of the full 60mm. These will provide less strength but can be used to save time and filament if preferred.
Update 11th Feb 22: I have fixed a couple of minor geometry issues and re-exported all of the STLs with a solid top face. This should hopefully stop any errors in Prusa Slicer. I have tested the new files in Cura and Prusa Slicer and they seem to now slice perfectly. Please let me know if you have any issues with the new STLs.
Update 15th Feb 22: I have just uploaded tolerance testers for the standard and looser-fit frame versions. These contain only the top and bottom frame profiles, and can be used to test how well each frame version connects. This should help to save wasted time and filament when deciding which version to use, and when trying to optimise slicer settings (no need to print a full frame every time to test).
Update 4th March 2022: For an unknown reason (I assume a bug), this design/thing has stopped showing in search results or the popular this year list. I am just about to raise this issue with Thingiverse, but if anyone knows what could be causing this or how to fix it, please let me know.
Update 21st March 2022: After a lot of emails, support tickets, and chasing, the design finally seems to be available again.:-D

I’m amazed how popular it has been, and it has given me the motivation to carry on designing new things and to keep learning how to make my designs better.
